About Us
Stroud Associates, Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers, was formed in 1997 and became a Limited company in April 2000. The company has provided a highly reputable and accountable service during this time.
Located on the outskirts of Ipswich, the company offers a broad range of services on a wide variety of projects and office-based design accompanied by site visits nationwide.
The firm’s ethos is to utilise the extensive knowledge and experience of the engineers on all projects. All designs are carried out by our engineers mentored by the Director. This ensures that the full breadth of expertise of all is applied to all our schemes using the latest technology to ensure Stroud Associates’ projects provide a safe, cost effective and optimum solution.
Our experience encompasses a wide spectrum of projects ranging from smaller domestic structural surveys/reports, domestic alterations, retaining wall and slope analysis, through to multi-million-pound commercial developments, including civil engineering works on roads, drainage and Flood Risk Assessments and highway/road designs.
Assessments and surveys of timber roofs and conditions of walls, with the appropriate recommendations and repair schedule.
Commercial construction ranging from apartments and housing, through to offices and schools, and up to large commercial structures including refurbishments and supermarkets.
We have made a major commitment in investing in programs to enhance our design capabilities and operate the following suites:

- MasterSeries frame analysis, designs, and detailing specialising in steel work 3D frame analysis.
- SCIA finite element analysis, design and detailing.
- Tekla program.
- IDEA StatiCa finite element connection design.
- MicroDrainage drainage analysis and design.
- WALLAP soils analysis program.
Temporary works are an important part of safety and we provide falsework designs, propping, tracked working platforms and façade shoring.
Stroud Associates Ltd are committed to quality and excellence and promote Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for all staff. We regularly hold meetings to assess our performance in an effort to ensure the highest quality service is provided. The company holds a Certificate of BSI Membership and is a member of the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA).

During his career, Phil’s extensive experience has been gained both onsite and desk-based design work, with construction experience during the recesses at university and 7 years spent on major construction projects. Followed by 38 years of office-based design work, that underpins a practical approach applied to all designs and structural reports. Phil enjoys a challenge and one of his specialities is his approach to resolving issues. This has enabled him to take a lateral approach to problem solving which now forms part of our expertise.
Construction projects have been major civil engineering contracts started with Nuclear submarine base construction , Devonport Dockyard, Construction of commercial projects in Birmingham and a major valley Bypass in South Wales. Office-based design experience includes working for an established Structural Engineering Consultant in Bedford, and subsequently opening and running the regional office for a national Structural Engineering Practice in Suffolk. Phil also managed property developments for a National PLC UK nationwide and in Calais, and in 1997 established Stroud Associates.
Phil actively supports continuing professional development (CPD) and investments in modern developments and new techniques to broaden his and the firms experience and expertise. Phil has served on the committee of the local branch of the Institution of Structural Engineers and has reviewed new publications for the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Sean has worked on surveying of the A11 Bypass for Barton Mills. For the next twenty years he worked as a Precast Concrete Designer/Draughtsman, Software Engineer and IT Manager, before joining Stroud Associates in 2007.
An experienced drainage design engineer using MicroDrainage to produce compliant drainage design, Flood Risk Assessments and Drainage Strategies. Sean has worked on several large-scale projects, using MicroDrainage packages. Sean has extensive knowledge on highway designs and optimising site drainage and road layouts. He also has full structural experience and has an expertise on advising on precast / prestressed concrete use in our projects.

Upon graduation, Thom worked in Malaysia designing multi-storey concrete buildings for two years and joined Stroud Associates in 2018. He is now close to Chartership in both Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers. He has fully embraced new technologies, specialising using 3D modelling and utilising finite element analysis, and has been running larger commercial projects. He has developed skills to provide efficient steel work structures and concrete frames and slabs.

Laurence is working towards Chartership in both Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers. He heads up the smaller works division providing a full service to domestic and smaller commercial projects. Where teamwork is required he integrates on larger projects to ensure deadlines are adhered to. He has specialist knowledge in soil medium, and using our soils analysis program WALLAP, provides a bespoke service for retaining wall and slope analysis design and can also check designs on behalf of clients.
Senior Engineer

Will joined the company on gaining his degree at Anglia Ruskin University. Will has over ten years’ experience running projects and has developed temporary works expertise in falsework design and detailing and extensive experience in detailing and historic timber frame repairs.
Administration Team
PA to the Director
Claire deals with the overall office administration and works closely with the Director and Engineering Team to provide a reliable and efficient turnaround of our work projects and manage visits. Claire is the main point of contact and will manage calls and enquiries to ensure clear communication and a timely response by the relevant member of the team.
